Dear Leslie,
My great-grandmother, Lillian Betty Lee Childress, was a sister of Nancy Lucinda. I do have some information on this family, most of it is from Lillian's children.

Thomas Jefferson Childress b c 1856 d bef 1900 married 03 19 1874 in Lauderdale Co TN to Julia Florence Catherine Moore b c 1852 d c 1890. (She was married previously to M. Brown Barnes on 11 12 1866 Lau Co TN and they had David b c 1867 and Polly b c 1872 who married a ?Gann. She died in AR. David had seizures or something of that nature and drowned while a young man.) TJ and Julia's children:

Allen & Jeff b c 1875 twins
Florence b c 1875 married William Love
Alice b c 1879
Nancy Lucinda b 1880 m c 1895 to Robert Monroe Ellis
Jettie Tommie Celeste b c 1881 mar William Augustus Ray
Eliza Lavinia b c 1883 d c 1963 m 1)Pate Sanders 2)Alvin Conrad
Lillian Betty Lee b 4 20 1885 d 4 8 1963 mar 11 11 1900 to John Samual Monroe Bradford.

All my life I've heard the story that a drunken man came to TJ's home around Christmas and when TJ wouldn't go with him, the man shot him. He didn't die immediately, but bled to death during the night. Also, Julia died sometime soon after TJ and the younger children were raised by the older siblings. Lilliam lived w/ Florence and Will in Halls TN until age 15 when she and John Bradford married.

In "Visions of Lauderdale County" pg 111 under the section titled "Outlaw Albert Cushman Terrorizes the County"...
"Thoms Jefferson Childress who lived in the Curve community was shot in cold blood by the outlaw gang with his four-year-old son standing at his side. The child ran to Mr. John Langley crying, "The Conferderates have killed my daddy." The footnote on the lower page clarifies that "Mr. Climer must have meant Jimmy (James Matthew) Langley, as he was the only Langley living in Curve at that time. His father John died in the 1850's."

I recently received a copy of a picture of TJ and Julia. Please send what info you have on the family and I will share the picture and other information. I'm glad I found your message! It has been very difficult to find info about this family. Take care. Paula Wilhite
