I agree with you on not having proofs of the actual names that goes the "L's" found for the second names of the several Robert Childresses of Knox Co. Also I agree that it is confusing, but then it is less confusing than it was when I first started on this my Childress line several years ago.
Might I add something about use of the Lindsay name. My grand-father was Alvis Lindsay Childress and his father was Robert Lindsay Childress. These names have proofs. My great grandfather Robert Lindsay was the son of Peter Carter Childress, the first child of my Robert Childress, brother of your James, and his 2nd wife Kesiah Carter. I too offer no proof, but it would not be uncommon for Peter Carter to name his first son after his father, Robert, and to use both his first and second name, Lindsay.
Actually in the later generations of these Knox Co Childress the use of Lindsay as a middle name became almost common place, so that my Robert, having Lindsay as a middle name becomes more and more probable. But then I too hesitate to list the Lindsay in his name as I know of no way to prove it.
Joseph "Jay" Childress
