Re: Linda’s posting:
I am researching some lines that have John, Joseph, Joel, James, Nancy (Ann),and Sarah (Sally) as mentioned in your posting. I have not encountered the names George, Martha, Silas, and Charles as mentioned in your posting. The other names you included are only sporadically encountered.

Re: Pat’s posting:
I am researching some lines that have William, Mary and Elizabeth as mentioned in your posting. I have not encountered in the lines that I have researched the names Obediah, Caleb, Boise, Levi, Cornelia, Elvia, Maud, Minerva, Tabitha as mentioned in your posting. The other names you included are only sporadically encountered.

I use naming patterns below as a guide

> 1st son - father's father
> 2nd son - mother's father
> 3rd son - father
> 4th son - father's oldest brother
> 5th son - father's second oldest brother or mother's oldest brother
>
> 1st dau - mother's mother
> 2nd dau - father's mother
> 3rd dau - mother
> 4th dau - mother's oldest sister
> 5th dau - mother's second oldest sister or father's oldest sister"

This naming pattern is European in origin and works with lesser and lesser accuracy after the mid 1700’s in America. Contributing to the inaccuracy in any era is that the named children may die before adulthood unbeknownst to a researcher who would have only a partial list. The unrecorded death of the first born child, for example, would make the strict application of this naming sequence inaccurate for a researcher who used the names of the surviving children listed in a will.
