The earliest 'documented' Childress in the line I am researching is Thomas Jefferson Childress, b. 10-27-1826 in Jackson, Co. AL near Belfont. He served in the Mexican American War and was discharged in New Orleans in 1846. He states on his pension application that his discharge papers were left with John K. Childress in Jackson Co. AL. He married a woman named Eliza Ray probably in Jackson Co and had the following children: possibly a son who died, then James Austin, Mary E. Robert, Silas, Thomas J. By 1860 the entire family can be found on the Hardeman Co., TN Fed census. By 1864 he was living in Franklin Co. AR and had married my ggm, Sarah Jane Anderson. The pension application states that she is his second wife but does not give the name of the first. Their children were: John Wesley, Nancy E, Joseph Benjamin, Martha Alice, Charles, and my gf, George Washington Childress. All the the first family was born in AL. All of the second family was born in AR. The 1850 census of AL lists a Jeff Childress with wife, Eliza and a one year old son, Thomas. Living nearby was Joel Childress with wife Nancy. Also living near was John K. Childress, probably the one referred to in the pension application. He is, however, to close in age to be TJC's father. I have yet to make all these connections but I feel that they exist. I have seen reference to John K. Childress in other postings. Do you have any ideas or info that would help? Linda
