Hi, Jo!
Just read your two 23 May 2005 postings. I've recently been struggling with the confusion of the Abraham vs. John CHILDERS data, too, trying to discover/verify my possible Cherokee heritage.
Do your records show whether or not John CHILDERS (the one you describe as dying in old Pendleton Co., SC) and his wife Nancy (WILKERSON?) had a daughter Rebecca, b. 16 Sep 1803, in Pendleton, SC?Do you know of a CHILDERS / BURNES connection (SC>TN>GA>TX>MO)?
My ggg-grandmother Rebecca CHILDERS/CHILDRESS m. abt 1822 (I believe in Greenville), SC, Thomas J. BURNES Sr. (b. 06 Mar 1801 in Greenville, SC; and he may have had Cherokee antecedents, as well). In 1830 this BURNES family (also found as BURNS or BURRIS) were in Hall Co., GA. They were in Murray Co., GA, by 1834; in Morgan Co., GA, by 1840; and back to the 63rd Subdivision of Murray Co., GA, by 1850. Then they migrated west to Polk Co., MO, in time to be counted there in the 1860 census. So far, I've found no record of either of them applying for Native American citizenship or benefits -- but I'm still looking!
Rebecca CHILDERS/CHILDRESS d. about 1863 in Polk Co., MO. Thomas BURNES Sr. m. 2) Lucinda C. GOLDSTON 28 Jul 1869 in Polk Co., MO; he d. there, himself, 13 Apr 1876.
Rebecca and Thomas Sr. had at least 6 children:
1. An unknown son, b.c. 1824, Greenville, SC; shown only on 1830 census, so may have d. as a child in SC.
2. Martha Ann BURNES, b. 25 Sep 1826, Greenville, SC; m.c. 1844 in GA, Galaway S. "G.S." PITNER (b. 29 Sep 1816, TN; d. 07 Nov 1895, Polk Co., MO); she d. after 07 Apr 1876, in Bolivar, Polk Co., MO. They had 8 children.
3. William Franklin BURNES (my gg-grandfather), b. 15 Feb 1829, Greenville, SC, m. 1) 20 Aug 1848 in Lumpkin Co., GA, Melvina A. SINGLETON (b. 01 Jan 1831, Greenville, SC); his surname was incorrectly recorded by the clerk, on the marriage record, as BURRIS. They're found in the 63rd Subdivision, Murray Co., GA, census in 1850. During their migration west, this family spent at least 3 years (1854-7) in the Waco, McLennan Co., TX, area (where one of their sos was born), but ended up with the rest of the BURNES family in Polk Co., MO, in time for the 1860 census; in fact, their youngest child was born there in Oct 1858. After bearing William 5 children (the eldest of whom, Mary Jane BURNES, 1849-1923, was my maternal g-grandmother), Melvina d. 28 Apr 1860 in Polk Co., MO, probably in childbirth, though such a possible 6th child did not survive, either. The 1860 census shows William as a widower with 5 children age 10 and under. He remarried 2) 16 Sep 1860 Mary Jane PARRISH (b. 13 Mar 1841, Polk Co., MO; d. 31 Jan 1913, Polk Co., MO), who gave him 7 more children, only 4 of whom lived to adulthood. William was a carpenter, farmer, and stock raiser, who served in Co. "K" of the 26th Enrolled MO Militia during the Civil War; he d. 01 Sep 1917 in Pleasant Hope, Polk Co., MO, and was bur. in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, about 5 mi. east of Bolivar.
4. James Wesley BURNES, b. 29 Jul 1834, Murray Co., GA; m.c. 1854 in Murray Co., GA, Mary A. --? (b. 1837, GA; d. aft 21 Jun 1880), and had 9 children. James was a Capt. in Co. "L" of the 15th MO Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War. Although he apparently migrated directly to Polk Co., MO, with the rest of his parents' family, and remained there until after the 1880 census, he d. aft. 10 Sep 1905 in McGregor, McLennan Co., TX -- so maybe he'd spent some time in TX with his brother William in the mid-1850s, too.
5. Thomas J. BURNES, Jr., b. 08 Apr 1837, Murray Co., GA, was in the Enrolled MO Militia during the Civil War. He m. 05 May 1857 in Polk Co., MO, Elvira Jane WRIGHT (b. 14 Oct 1841, MO; d. 01 Mar 1917, Polk Co., MO), with whom he had 5 children before his death at age 34 (possibly as a result of service-connected wounds or illness, as implied in Elvira's 1890 widow's pension application), on 26 Jan 1872 in Polk Co., MO.
6. Nancy 'Mary' BURNES, b. 14 Nov 1841, Murray Co., GA, m. 20 Feb. 1862 in Polk Co., MO, Ira O. PARRISH, Jr. (b. 26 Jun 1842, Polk Co., MO; d. aft 1889, Polk Co, MO; next-younger brother of Mary Jane PARRISH, the 2nd wife of her brother William, above), before her untimely death at age 22 on 01 Mar 1864. As with her mother, Mary probably died in childbirth; no child survived her death, either. On 17 Sep 1866, Ira Jr. m. 2) Mary J. ARMOUR (b. 27 Jun 1841, Giles Co., TN), and had 5 children.
Well, that's pretty much all the information I have about Rebecca's family, which I've offered in such detail in hopes you might recognize some or all of them. I'd very much like to locate both Rebecca's CHILDERS parents and her BURNES parents-in-law. Thanks for any assistance you might be able to give, and of course I'm happy to share whatever else I have that might be of interest to you, as well.
Bettyann
