"CHILDERS in Indian Territory: pre-statehood 1907"
Greetings, Wiser:
I came across your Childers post, and thought I would ask if you have come across our Childers line in your research.
I am searching for any possible clues regarding the ancestry of my ggg grandparents, ROBERT CHILDERS & MARY / POLLY [BROWN] CHILDERS, who removed to the Honey Creek / Southwest City area in late 1837.
To date, we have been unable to connect Robert & Mary with others who have the Childers surname.
Quite recently, we discovered that another individual (also with the name of Childers) settled
in the SAME AREA, during the SAME TIME PERIOD.
Therefore, I am also searching for information about a WILLIAM CHILDERS, who removed
to the samevicinity as Robert Childers (also in 1837), with Cherokee leaders Major Ridge, his son John Ridge, and their families.
William Childers operated a store for the Ridges after their removal to Honey Creek.
Prior to that, he was a ferryman for the Ridge family.
I do not know if there is a connection between our (mysterious) Robert Childers & the newly-discovered William Childers; however, considering that two men with the surname of CHILDERS both removed to the same area -- in the same time-period, makes a familial connection seem 'possible'.
Family tradition states that Robert Childers (and/or his wife, Mary / Polly Brown), was of Native American ancestry. As of yet, we have been unable to prove (or disprove) this persistent family lore.
We have searched (for years!) for clues regarding the identity ROBERT CHILDERS, and his wife, Mary. Who were their extended family? Their parents; and, siblings?
*Is there a familial connection to WILLIAM CHILDERS?
We do not know.
We would sincerely appreciate any information or guidance that you (or, others?) might offer...
Peace & blessings,
Cathy Porter-Maynard (In Minnesota)
