Hi Paul,

My wife is a Chidester via Holdridge Chidester b. 1809-1810 (NY) and of Owego, Tioga Co. NY (1850 census)and later of Liberty TSH, Susquhanna Co. PA (1860--) (Holdrige married in turn the Richardson sisters from Halstead, PA). He is buried with other Chidesters in Tracy Creek Cemetery (now in Vestal, Broome Co. NY).

Apparently many of the Southern Tier NY/Northern Tier PA Chidester's were both carpenters and church ministers. They built churchs, then preached; then built more churches and preached in those. We are trying to get leads on Holdridge's parents (maybe Joshua Chidester??) both probably born in NJ. For example, on one site I saw it proposed that Holdrige's parent might have been Joshua Chidester and Rebbeca Garrison.

I assume these Chidesters go back to the early CT Chidesters eventually.

Thanks for any leads you might have.

Rod Dietert (rrd1@cornell.edu)
