SAMUEL13 CHIDESTER (SAMUEL12, SAMUEL11, DAVID10, JAMES9 CHICHESTER, WILLIAM8, JOHN7, JOHN6, JOHN5, NICHOLAS4, RICHARD3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born 1774 in NJ, and died August 28, 1820 in The Plains, East Baton Rouge Parish, LA. He married MARIA MARY SHAW Bef. 1795 in Probably, MS, daughter of CORNELIUS SHAW and CATALINA MCGILL. Notes for SAMUEL CHIDESTER: Chidester Research received from Elmer Anderson. The following letter was received by Lois Chidester Salmans from Elmer Anderson dated 9 Dec. 1983. Quote; "... SAM and MARY SHAW, SAM b ca 1770 in either NJ or VA. His father SAMUEL and mother MERCY or MARCY LOUDON or LANDER md MARIE or MARY SHAW who was b Maryland father CORNELIUS SHAW mother CATHERINE McGill or McGEE ..." Letter from Elmer Anderson dated 2 May 1977. Quote; ".. (undated, but have her born in 1795 with an older sister born 1792) CHIDESTER RESEARCH IN LOUISIANNA Done by Jack Pullen, NY Sources: THE PLAINS AND IT'S PEOPLE, Virginia Lobell Jennings; Pelican Publishing Co., New Orleans, 1962. CATHOLIC CHURCH RECORDS OF LOUISIANNA, Diocese of East Baton Rouge. MISSISSIPPI COURT RECORDS, Adams County, MS. 1799-1805. NATCHEZ DISTRICT OF FLORIDA, Court Records 1767-1805. 1792; Samuel Chidester married Maria Shaw, daughter of Cornelius (Cornelio) Shaw. 1792; Since a Cornelius (Cornelio) Shaw lived n Adams County MS as early as 1792, I must believe Samuel married in MS. JP 1794; 7 February 1794, Samuel witnessed the will of Samuel Swaze; SAMUEL SWAZE WILL; (abstracted). MS Court Records 1799-1805; Adams Co, MS. Wife; Elizabeth, daughter Elizabeth, sons, James, John, Daniel and Samuel. Witnesses; Samuel Chidester, John Short, Andrew Scanlon, Joseph Duncan, William Taylor, Adam Cloud, John McChristy. Samuel Swaze was the pastor of The First Congregational Church of Roxbury, Morris Co, NJ, and a Loyalist, when in 1772 he purchased a land grant in the Natchez District of West Florida, comprising 19000 acres from a retired sea captain, OGDEN. With a brother, Richard, and the families of their grown children, they sailed from Perth Amboy, NY to Pensacola and proceeded to the land on the Homochitto River near Natchez. In 1781 Richard died, and Samuel followed in 1783. Most of their children returned to New Jersey after 1790 to claim their inheritances. In the list of witnesses to his will were two other pastors of the same NJ church who went to Natchez after 1790. JP MS Court Records 1799-1805; Adams Co, MS., February 7, 1794. SEE SAMUEL SWAZE COMPLETE GENEALOGICAL REPORT. 1795; It is not dated in any records when Chidester migrated to Natchez District of West Florida and this is the first record I have found for him. I believe he was a young man and was unmarried at the time, or at least newly married, His oldest daughter was born in 1795. JP 1798; Natchez Court Records1767-1805; Unrecorded Land Claims. Claimant; David Greenleaf 24 March 1804. David Greenleaf claims 200 arpens in Jefferson County on the waters of Fairchild's Creek about 14 miles from Natchez, it being part of a tract of 1000 acres granted by the Spanish Government to James Fletcher. Said 200 acres was transferred by said Fletcher to Samuel Chidester and then to David Greenleaf, 21 February 1798. 1800; Before 1800 he moved to a small Spanish Land Grant at a place called Little Plains in what would be later become East Baton Rouge, LA. To date this move; One daughter was born in 1799 in MS and another in 1801 in LA. JP The Chidesters were Catholic in Louisiana. I believe this was probably because of Spanish laws toward religion. That law stated; Settlers accepting land grants from Spain were forbidden to practise any religion other than Catholic. Though they need not convert they must agree that any children born thereafter in the territory must be raised under Catholic Church Laws. It seems that several families, who were evident in Natchez records made this move to Louisiana and in subsequent years most of the families were intermarried. Chidester, Shaw, McHugh, McChristy, Sullivan and Skinner. Al lived near each other in both areas. JP The area comprising the Northeast part of Louisiana did not fall under the Louisiana Purchase and was annexed by the United States in December 1810. In 1811the US contested Chidesters right to his land grant and after investigation granted him the land under US laws. Record from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Natchez. Index and records are located in the Archives, Catholic Diocese of Jackson, P.O. Box 2248, Jackson, MS 39205. COMMENT; Inasmuch as Isabella is not mentioned in her father's will, she must have died at birth or some time before his will was prepared. SARAH ELIZABETH14 CHIDESTER (SAMUEL13, SAMUEL12, SAMUEL11, DAVID10, JAMES9 CHICHESTER, WILLIAM8, JOHN7, JOHN6, JOHN5, NICHOLAS4, RICHARD3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1795 in MS, and died 1865. She married ANTONIO SHAFFETT December 28, 1815 in St. John's Catholic Church, Baton Rouge, LA, son of MIGUEL SHAFFET and CATERINA ----?----. He was born 1783 in IRELAND. More About SARAH ELIZABETH CHIDESTER: Burial: 1865, Shaffet Family Cemetery, Site 1, Zachary, LA Notes for ANTONIO SHAFFETT: CATHOLIC CHURCH RECORDS OF LOUISIANA, Diocese of East Baton Rouge. Sarah Elizabeth Chidester (Samuel and Maria Shaw) 28 December 1815 married Antonio Shaffett. Witnesses, Joshua B. Bruer and Thomas Losado. Anthony Shaffett, born in LA (see below), 1783. Married Sarah Elizabeth Chidester, born 1795 in MS. Anthony would have been 12 years older than Sarah at the time of the marriage. He was 32 years old and she was 20 at that time. His family came from Ireland, her family is said to have come from VA to MS and then to LA before 1800 to settle in Little Plains. Her family is said to be related to George Washington through the Ball Family. (The Plains and Its People). The part about relation to George Washington is, I believe, one of those traditions that no one tried to prove. I believe that Samuel Chidester came from NJ. As will be seen below in the church records. Samuel's mother was, nee, Landton or Landon and the Chidesters and Landons were somehow related in NJ. JP. In addition, the people that were in George Washigton's genealogy were CHICHESTERS and not CHIDESTERS.
