The answer to your question--both names are right. Historically, in the Acadian culture, in some parishes, and in some families, Joseph was the baptisimal name for all boys, and Mary was the name for all girls! I don't know how long this practise was observed, but it was still done in the 1930's. My Dad was born in 1890, and his baptisimal name was Joseph--though he never used it. You might get confirmation of this practise by contacting Dennis Boudreau on this forum.
