Dennis Boudreau is right on! Longfellow, according to historians, had never been to Acadia, but was sold the story by another writer at a meeting in a roadside inn, somewhere here in Massachusetts. Her name was not Evangeline, but Emeline Labiche, and her fiance was Joseph Arsenault. But Longfellow didn't like rhyming with Emeline, so he changed the name!
