Christopher Cheyne b.1754 said to be from Pettigo, Co. Fermanagh Ireland came to Canada about 1825 with sons Andrew and Christopher settling on Centre Road, Peel County, Ontario (south of Brampton). They came with a caravan of sttlers who were Wesleyan Methodists. A son George married Abigail Walker and their son was named Lancelot Walker Cheyne. In 1940 a descendent contacted Sarah Jane Cheney b. 1874 in County Tyrone. She believed the Cheney family had come from England. She knew her grandfather's cousin Christopher had gone to Canada. Sarah Anne's Great-grandfather was Frank Cheney who married a Ritchie. Her grandfather was George Cheney d.1882 who married Sarah Crummer. He came from Petigo, Co. Donegal. His family was as follows: John d. 1908 on homestead, George married Miss Blayney and d. in USA, William Cheney, Co. Fermanagh, James died in USA, Robert and Francis Cheney d in Australia leaving families. Sarah Jane was George's daughter. Our family believes there is a marriage connection with the Irvines of Irvine Castle at Irvinestown and Sir Gerard Lowther. The Irvines were connected by marriage to Lancelot Carleton of Rossfad High Sheriff, Co. Fermanagh 1683. Perhaps someone has the names of a daughter of an Irvine or a Carleton who married a Cheney. Information in Burkes Peerage and Landed Gentry is helpful but I have not found the connection.
