In this month's "North & South - The Official Magazine of the Civil War Society" (Volume 9 - number 6) there is an article about the CSS Shenandoah's search for Yankee Whaling Ships during the Civil War. Quotes from Lt. Francis Chew are included from his diary of that trip and there is even a very nice photo of Lt. Francis Chew. Also a sketch of the CSS Shenandoah.
Francis Chew's 2 volume diary (1863-1865) and his autobiography (1881) are now housed in the Southern Historical Collection of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. I have scanned the photo and would be happy to send a copy to anybody who is interested.
