I am sending this message with tears in my eyes and a heavy lump in my throat. I think I have information for you that gives me much pain & great shame but I hope will help you in your search. I had a gggggrandfather named Wilie Cherry who was a travelling silversmith & slave trader. According to my ggggrandmother Smallwood, his daughter, he bought slaves in South Carolina & took them to Mississippi to resell. I think I remember that slaves were often given the last names of their owners. Could this be the origin of your family name? During this time he lived in Raymond MS & Noxubee (sp?) County, MS. He died at Chapel Hill Church, MS. He must have been a real S.O.B., according to this & several other ugly stories!
