Cherry Family, Illinois, California

Seeking information on Joseph F. and Anna Cherry, born 1830, believed to be Madeiran(Portuguese)religious exiles who settled in Jacksonville, Illinois between 1840-1850. Yes, I realize that Cherry isn't a Portuguese surname, but it is their Anglicized name that they used from that time forward. I'd love to find information about their original surnames. In 1890-1906, they lived in San Lorenzo, California, where he was a minister. Both are buried in San Lorenzo, Ca. They had a number of children:James (1856), John (1857), Isabella (1859), Joseph (1862), Annie (1864), Emma (1866), and Mary (1868). Anna lived with nephew Joe Cherry, born 1853,in 1900, Alameda, Ca. Any information would be helpful!
