I'm wondering if there is a connection here that might help me solve my "George Cherry problem" -- it has its own file.

I have an ancestor, George Cherry, for whom I have conflicting (big time) data. His grave in southern Illinois is marked as a Revolutionary War veteran in a South Carolina regiment but the dates (b. 1800 in Ireland) I have for him are too late for that. Others have noticed and I have yet to get the DAR records. The reason I ask is that I have a late 19th century photo of the double pen log cabin he built in southern Illinois after he came up from South Carolina (he was a Covenanter Presbyterian and an abolitionist). My great-grandfather, James Renwick Neill (grandson of a George Cherry's) stands next to a man and young man named Chestnut.

George Cherry is buried in the Oakdale, Illinois cemetery and his grave is marked by the Fort Chartres Chapter of the DAR. I will be up there in a couple of weeks and will take photos of the stone. Does any of this sound familiar? There is a generation missing somewhere and I aim to find it.
