Could you possibly mean Martha "McKnight" of Tenn., who was of indian descent. There were several James McKnight's also. Somehow the McKnight name got shortened for several reasons. My GGgrandfather signed himself in the Union Army as Knight so as not embarrass his brothers who were fighting for the Confederates. After the war he went back to the correct spelling but never changed it on his military documents and when he died and his widow applied for his pension, she was denied and had to fight to get it.
