Lettice Chenery (aka Dallenger) was the daughter of Charles Chenery Dallenger and Sarah Watling. She was born in Suffolk, and died in 1892 in Australia. She married George Clutton in 1841, and they had issue. So much you probably already know. The reason for the confusion of names is that her father was born out of wedlock. The grandfather was Charles Chenery of Wilby (ca. 1752-1824), and his mother was Dinah Dallenger, or Dallinger (1767-sometime before 1818), Chenery's housekeeper. Though legally (e.g. for census purposes) the family name was Dallenger, the members tended to use Chenery. Lettice's father's headstone in Wilby bears the name "Charles Dallenger Chenery". Lettice was the youngest of the family, and had four siblings: Dinah (b. 1816), Caroline (b. 1817), Maria (about 1818-1863), and Charles (1819-76). I know nothing about the three sisters, except that Maria is buried as "Maria D. Chenery" beside her mother in Wilby. In addition, there were two half-brothers, sons of Sarah Roper of Wilby: Charles Chinnery Dallinger Roper (b. 1810), and James Roper (1819-41). Lettice's full brother Charles married Isabella Baldry of Wilby Hall in 1853. They had six children, two of whom emigrated to the US. From 1841 to 1868, Charles was a Latin Master at Cheltenham College, though he maintained Russell Lodge. After his retirement he had Russell House built. His widow lived on there until her death in 1914, after which the property was sold. The page referred to by Marion Chenery may well be mine. Unfortunately it is down just now, but I hope to post it again soon. Notify Administrator about this message?
