Cheethams Leeds-Liverpool Canal

I am looking for 2 family names RUDDOCK (3 generations of Thomas)
and especially CHEETHAM.

The Cheethams seem to have been a very large extended family living in Lancashire and working the Leeds & Liverpool Canal as boatmen and women more or less since it opened in 18th century. They married into many other Canal families like mine - the Ruddocks (on three occasions at different generations!).

My granddad Tom RUDDOCK married Gladys BENTHAM in 1934 at a double ceremony where his best friend Tommy CHEETHAM married Gladys' sister Lilly BENTHAM. Tommy was the son of Richard Cheetham and Margaret Gibbons (buried in Halsall).

My great grandfather's brother Peter Ruddock who lived in a cottage on the canal bank opposite Wigan Pier married an Elizabeth Cheetham in 1897.

Their father, also Thomas Ruddock married Margaret CHEETHAM in 1870.

On the 1881 census Margaret has died and the Ruddocks are living with their grandmother Elizabeth Cheetham of 75 years old.

The oldest reference I have is a James Cheetham b. Halsall, Lancashire in 1794. I'm trying to find my more recent family's relationship to him.

The Cheethams lived at different villages along the L&L Canal, particularly Burscough, Lathom, Lydiate, Halsall in Lancashire.

Any information about Cheethams in Lancashire and especially on the Canal will be most appreciated.

Best wishes,

Adrian Pearson (Barcelona, Spain)
