Hi Nikki,
My information is coming from a number of different sources. First from the family itself. Firstly from my Mum & Dad who are helping me by visiting the graveyards where our family were buried. I have an Aunt called Margaret Cheetham. She has a family Bible and some birth certificates.
The canal history is common knowledge to a certain extent. I was born & bred in Lancashire myself, very near the canal bank and all my mother's family worked on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal as boatmen and women for at least 3 generations that we know of.
When my grandfather died he left me numerous books related to the history of the canal including one called "Burscough Boatmen their Boats and their Marriages" written by Bob Cheetham Houghton which gives a list of marriages between the different boat families like mine and the Cheethams.
My great great grandmother was called Margaret Cheetham.
My great grandfather's brother Peter married an Elizabeth Cheetham.
My granddad's best friend who married my grandmother's sister was Thomas Cheetham.
All of this information comes from talking to the family.
Finally I have got information from kind people in England who have been able to look at the British census for 1881 for the villages where my family lived and have given me the details from there.
Do you know if your family worked on the canal or what work they did in Wigan?
I will check my files again to see if I can find any William Cheetham in the Wigan area with his dates and will be in touch again.
Best wishes,
Adrian in Barcelona.
