Pitt County was formed in the 1750's from the western half of Beaufort County. Richard Cheek of Beaufort Co. made a will in 1743. Richard Cheek was a neighbor of Samuel Swearingen Jr. who lived in Edgecombe County on the county line with Beaufort County (Pitt Co. after it was formed). In his will Richard named wife Jane; sons Randolph, William, James, John, and Robert; daughters Elizabeth Burney, Jane Cheek, and Ann Cheek; and one of his executors was Richard Cheek Jr. My guess would be that Eleanor Cheek was the widow of one of Richards sons. At least one of his sons went to Anson Co. sometime in the 1750's or 1760's. I believe it was John but can't find my record. The Swearingens went to Anson in the 1760's and some of them settled on Cheek's Creek there. Samuel Swearingen Jr. named one of his sons Richard Cheek Swearingen. I have often wondered if the Cheeks and Swearingens were more than just neighbors.
