The following deposition of John Dabney is contained in Amelia Co., VA, loose papers, transcribed by Barbara Vines Little and published in the Magazine of VA Genealogy, Vol. 36, No. 4, pp.285-286. Dabney's deposition reveals that Robert Cheek worked as an overseer for Dibdale Holt in Amelia Co. during the years 1752-1754. According to the transcriber, the deposition appears to be part of a court suit, probably rental of land. She concludes that John Dabney (the deponent) was associated with a tobacco warehouse (tobacco was used as currency in colonial Virginia), & Dibdale Holt was renting land, probably from Abraham Cocke. "John DABNEY of the age of Sixty Years being fi[rst] Sworn on the Evangelists of Almighty God Deposeth and saith ... [there follows an account of various hogsheads of tobacco transacted among Dibdale HOLT, Abraham COCKE, William NEWSUM, and Robert CHEEK during 1752 and 1754] .... "This Deponent Farther saith that all the Tobacco that was brought Down to the Inspection of Dibdale HOLTS was passed in the said HOLTS Name till the last year of Term of the Rent. This Depont heard Capt. Abrahm. COCKE tell the Inspector to have the Tobacco passed in his name and said then no Body could meddle with it and this Deponent believes that the Tobacco brought Down the last Year Robt. CHEEK was Overseer for the said HOLT was passed in the name of Capt. Abrahm. COCKE". --------------------------- NOTE: Tax records of Amelia Co., VA, show that Robert CHEEK was living with Dibdale HOLT in 1752, 1754, and 1755, and living with Abraham COCKE in 1756.
