This is not my line of Cheeks & I don't know much about them, however, I thought someone might be interested in this delightfully obscure reference. It apparently appears in an article about Davy Crockett from "Frontier Times Magazine" Vol.6 No.8 (May 1929). Davy Crockett, who as everyone knows was King of the Wild Frontier, was born "on the banks of the Nolachucky river, in east Tennessee, August 17, 1786." Apparently when he was a young man, he was hired to assist in driving a herd of cattle 400 miles across the mountains to "a place in Virginia about three miles from Natural Bridge". There he met one Jesse Cheek, who hired him to take some cattle to Front Royal, Virginia.
You may be able to order a copy of the article at http://www.frontiertimesmagazine.com . I don't have the whole article, just an abstract that appeared on the above website.
