I had always heard my SHAVERS (CHAVERS) were Jewish & Cherokee mixed. This is in NC. However, I've found my ancestors were tri-racial-- mixed White, Black, and Indian. My SHAVERS (CHAVERS) ancestors claimed to be Jewish in order to "pass" in White society. They were too dark to claim English, Scottish, etc. so they covered up their heritage by saying their people were Jewish. I know their are some real Jews named CHAVERS, mainly from Poland & Russia. But many of the CHAVERS in the American South are descended from the CHAVIS family-- this is the case with my family.
