John enlisted for CSA in Monroe Co., Ala. in October 1861 and served throughout the Civil War together in Company I, 24th Alabama Infantry Regiment. His brother, Uriah, joined him in November 1861. The regiment fought in many battles in Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. Considering the high casualties their unit suffered, it is remarkable both survived and did not receive major wounds.

There are copies of John T.’s Florida Application for Pension of 13 JUL 1907 when he was over 73 years of age. Uriah completed an affidavit for John T. and John T. returned the favor for Uriah. John T. served throughout the war without receiving any wounds or losing “any member of my body.” John T. states “My command was at Highpoint, North Carolina at the time of General Lee’s surrender. We broke up from that place.” His pension was approved on 27 DEC 1907 with pay back to 10 AUG 1907 at the rate of $120 per year. Unfortunately, he died in less than 2 years and did not get to enjoy his small pension long. Lucretianne CHAVERS applied for her Widow’s Pension and was approved 5 MAY 1908.

From Confederate Military History – pages 131-134: The 24th Alabama Infantry was organized at Mobile in August 1861. In April 1862 it was ordered to Corinth, and was under fire at Farmington on May 9th, 1862; then to Blackland 4 JUN 1862. It was in the Kentucky campaign, but did not become engaged; lost heavily at Murfreesboro, and was distinguished at Chickamauga, where it lost over 30 per cent of its number, and at Missionary Ridge. It was with General Johnston in the campaign of 1864, and fought in most of the battles from Dalton to Jonesboro. It was at Columbia, Tenn., on 29 NOV 1864; at Franklin on 30 NOV 1864; and at Nashville, 15-16 DEC 1864.
Capt. W B. Smith and Lieutenant Cooper were killed at Murfreesboro, Capt. Wm. J. O’Brien at Chickamauga, and Capt. John B. Hazard, mortally wounded at Missionary Ridge, was taken prisoner and died at Johnson’s Island.
Its commanders were Cols. William A. Buck and Newton N. Davis, Lieut.-Cols. Benjamin F. Sawyer, Wm. B. Dennett, Geo. A. Jennison and Wm. M. LeBaron, Maj. Junius J. Pierce. Capts. S. H. Oliver and Thos. J. Kimbell were at times in command of regiment.
