I have some recordings by a granddaughter of URIAH CHAVERS (11/6/1838-2/14/1915) and ELIZABETH SMITH (1845-1890). In one she relates the story that her great-grandfather (which would be father of Uriah, William CHAVERS) had 5 sons who fought in the Civil War (John T, Uriah, William Edmund, Francis Marion, Andrew Jackson "Ace") but that he was too old to serve. When the Yankees would come through, William would hide in a cistern and his slaves would bring him food, drink and books to read. Because of their loyalty he gave each of them some land after the War, and they in turn took his last name.

CAN ANYONE VERIFY THIS STORY?
