Hi Anne,
Also author Sidney Marchand, Donaldsonville, La., wrote about 3 books on Ascension Parish. In one book I think I remember reading an excerpt that your ancestor J. B. Chauvin had a cypress picket house about 17' x 33' or so with split cypress walls, roof & floor. (These froe split cypress planks were called "les merrains"). In the 1790's, before "Les Americains" bought us in 1803, John Law's Germans, the Spanish Canary Islanders, the French, the black and white Creoles from Haiti, the Acadians and other frontiersmen all lived among the Indians. All newborn babies under Spanish Government had to be baptized Roman Catholic, regardless of religious origin -- no religious freedom. Catholic records were well maintained and are easy to trace during the early times in Louisiana.
Sincerely, Henry L. Chauvin
