I'll try to explain what a person said in French to be "chauvin" means: it is someone who feels that everything, everybody from his place, country, club, group in general, is better than anybody (anything) else. He's never realistic but always feel that he lives at the center of the world with the best people on earth. I guess the translation in English derives from the French: chauvinistic
(or jingoistic).
Hope I have been clear enough!

Patrick
