Hi Alice, Never heard of 1st Chauvin born in La., nor last to die in war of 1812. There is also a book, "La. in the War of 1812" by Powell Casey, at New Orleans library which lists three Chauvin soldiers who elisted to serve in the 1815 Battle of New Orleans. Our ancestor from France, Jacques Augustin Chauvin, enlisted on December 25, 1814, in the 6th Regiment in Donaldsonville, La., county seat of the old Acadia Parish, (which is presently St. James and Ascension Parish). He was killed in 1821 in Mobile Alabama -- cannot find details. In 1768, (eight (8) years before the 1776 George Washington et al's conspiracy against Great Britain, i.e., U.S. Declaration of Independence), Nicolas Chauvin de la Freniere, Jr., (think son of one of the 3 brothers mentioned), with Verret and several others, like Washington and Jefferson, were conspiring against Spain, and attempting to sign the first declaration of independance on the American continent, declaring Louisiana free from foreign dominion. He and his group were invited to meet officials, tricked into capture, and shot before a firing squad at the old mint in the french quarter in New Orleans. Best to read about this in books mentioned before -- too long a story. Sincerely, Henry L. Chauvin
