Michel Chauvin dit St-Suzanne, born January 1612 in Ste-Suzanne, Laval, Maine, France has an interesting story, and created quite a scandal. His contract of marriage in 1647 with Anne states that he 30 years old and could not sign his name. It confirms his birth in Maine and lists his profession as unknown. Anne is referred to as the daughter of a labourer. He didn't offer a lot in the way of dowry, but the contract states that Anne shall be entitled to her part of the estate of Michel's parents once it comes to him.
In late 1650 it came to light that Michel was a bigamist. His marriage to Anne was illegal and was annulled. He fled the colony to avoid prosecution. In 1654 Anne married Jean Gervais whose profession is listed as "maitre-boulanger" and Gervais raised Charlotte as one of his own children.
On February 5, 1651 an inventory was taken of Michel's estate in Montreal although he was not deceased. He is listed as having land "2 arpents sur 15" and 600 livres. His debts are listed as 279 livres, 14 sols et 6 deniers. His net surplus is listed as being 780 livres, 15 sols et 6 deniers.
He is listed as having died July 29, 1699.
My husband is also descended from Jean Beaudoin and Marie Charlotte Chauvin. I would be happy to swap info with you.
