Yes, You are very correct concerning bloodlines that are not descendant. However, those adoptions, out of wedlock births, or simply raising of children by others than the natural parents can easily be recognized and discarded. All we basically need in our DNA "family" are two DNA submissions from separate branches of the same surname clan..there may be a slight mismatch due to genetic mutation over time, but the actual family match will be evident. In our group, my 4th cousin, down from the brother of my great grandfather Samuel and I match 100%. Others of the different clan in SO. GA match up with perhaps one mutation..still extremely good, and verifies the family association by DNA and Haplogroup association. We also have a "Chance" in our group, who joined the Chancey Group to discover if the Chance surname fit in with the Chanceys...it does not. However, we still do not have enough Chanceys of different branches to compare with...if and when we get some of the NC/ALA/TN/VA/Tex etc. etc. Chanceys interested and they submit their male DNA, we may discover a Chance/Chancey match. There is an "old wives tale" that our SE GA Chanceys came to America and took up a new surname...this is generally discarded as fiction...but, it could be...so...other Chancey submissions from other branches may very well prove that we SE Georgia Chanceys were not Chanceys back in time... Here a few websites that offer some very good study information concerning Y-DNA, what to expect..the percentages, etc. etc. Even if there is a good DNA match between two different surnames, the two surnames may very well have a different Haplogroup association...Haplogroups define a region of the world where that specific DNA came from...so..it would be impossible for a Chancey and a Smith..who have exactly the same DNA markers, but a different Haplogroup to be related. http://blairgenealogy.com/dna/ http://blairgenealogy.com/dna/dna101.html http://www.contexo.info/DNA_Basics/ Notify Administrator about this message?
