If Rev. James Chasteen was born in 1740 and died in 1820, he would have been 74 years old when Renney was born 1814. I know that this might be possible but it is improbable. My source does not list a son named Renney. However, Rev. James Chasteen did have a brother named Rene. B. 1745 in Goochland D. 21 Mar 1818. Rev. James Chasteen Had a son named Benjamin. Could this be where the mix-up is? According to my source, 1783 - Rev. James was a citizen of North Carolina where he received a land grant of 300 acres on Indian Camp Creek, in the part of North Carolina that became Sullivan County, TN Source: "North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee 1778-91", page 26, compiled by Cartwright and Gardiner. 1785-86 - he obtained Land Grants of 135 acres, 547 acres, and 154 acres in Greenville Co, 96th District, SC on the South Tyger River. 1790 - He bought land in Pendleton District, SC in the French Broad River Valley. 1790 - Census, 96th District, Pendleton So. SC, page 81: 2 males 16 and above 1790 - 92 - He was a minister of Genestie Church, Pendleton District, SC 1794-98 - He was a minister of Little Horse Creek Church, SC After year 1810, he lived near the Savannah River in SC preaching at Mountain Creek Branck (7 minles SW of Anderson Co) until his death in 1820. His children are listed as: Stephen Chastain Stephen Chastain, b. 1762 , d. 24 may 1830 Lived in Pendleton District since 1787-88 but was living in Anderson District SC at time of his death . Children: Note: since Stephen died in May, 1830, this was about a week before the census was taken that year. JOHN CHASTAIN There is not much to go on about this John. After much seculation, this is submitted. 1810 census for Pendleton Dist., SC (the general area of this state in which this family was living at this time period). page 164 Stephen Chasteen - 2 maless under 10; 1 male 16-26; 1 male 45+; 1 female 10 - 16; 1 female 26 - 45. page 164 John Chasteen 1 male under 10; 1 male 16 - 26; 1 female 16 - 26. This John is the only man who matches Renny's possible father in the 1820 Pendleton Census, so his birthdate is narrowed to 1784-90. The Stephen next door fits well as John's possible father being born before 1765 and a wife born by 1770 Stephen and his wife then born in the 1760's. 1820 Census, Anderson/Pendleton Districts page 210: John Chesteen with 4 males under 10; the most likely candidate as Renny's father. This John living near James and David in 1830 and near the Same David and a Samuel and Stephen in 1820 was born 1780-90. Notation: The change in spelling of the Chasteen beginning on the census records for these SC Chastains. From that generation on, this line of Chasteens have spelled their name CHASTEEN. I do hope that this helps. My Aunt Naomi Jackson Chasteen has done all of the geneology for my father's and her husband's (my uncle) family. She has published a CHASTEEN GENEALOGY AND FAMILY HISTORY. She lives in Broken Arrow, OK My Uncle's name is Carl Chasteen. My father is deceased.
