Listed below is some great information I just received that I would like to share with you...
I am trying to make a connection that this Eli Chasteen noted below is my gg-grandfather...
My Eli Chasteen had a son named Lafayette (my g-grandfather),his son was Robert(my grandfather), his daughter was my mother Ethel... If you have any information please share with me the same as I have with you...
Regards...Joseph Chasteen Massey...

There was an Eli Chastain (Chasteen, etc.) that is a very good
possibility for your ancestor, I just don't have a great deal on him in the
database, but maybe enough for you to look over and hopefully make a
connection or eliminate from consideration!! His family relocated back and
forth between extreme northwest SC and North GA. The family seemed to
prefer the Chasteen spelling.

Eli was the son of Nancy Chastain and traditionally Mark Burrell. It
appears that Nancy had all of her children out of wedlock with Burrell. We
have record that Mark Burrell was married to a Hulda Denton but descendants
of several of Nancy's children claim that he was the father. One of the
older sons, and brother to Eli, James Osborne went by both Chastain and
Burrell. Nancy was the daughter of William "Bill" Chasteen and wife Annie
Motes. William's lineage is Abner Chastain-4, Rev. John Chastain-3, Peter
Chastain, Jr.-2, and Pierre Chastain-1.

The family is noted in 1850 in Rabun Co, GA, then later in Oconee Co, SC,
they seemed to relocate back and forth up to 1880 or so. I'll paste in
Nancy's family below but it appears from a family bible record that Eli
Chastain was born 2 Mar 1848 in South Carolina. Eli appears to be the same
person as noted in 1880 census for Whitewater district of Oconee County, SC,
same area that Nancy was recorded as residing in. The family is enumerated
as:

Chasteen       Elyah              Head       32       1848       SC       Oconee       Whitewater       18       127       7
Chasteen       Mary              Wife       33       1847       SC       Oconee       Whitewater
Chasteen       Columbus       Son       9       1871       SC       Oconee       Whitewater
Chasteen       Sarah              Daug       6       1874       SC       Oconee       Whitewater
Chasteen       M. Elizabeth       Daug       4       1876       SC       Oconee       Whitewater
Chasteen       Malissa              Daug       2       1878       SC       Oconee       Whitewater

Here's the family of Eli's brother Mike Chasteen in the same census, notice
there's a Lafayette noted:

Chasteen       Mike              Head       37       1843       SC       Oconee       Whitewater       18       127       14
Chasteen       T. Avaline       Wife       36       1844       NC       Oconee       Whitewater
Chasteen       H. Lafyatte       Son       14       1866       SC       Oconee       Whitewater
Chasteen       J. Ervin              Son       12       1868       SC       Oconee       Whitewater
Chasteen       Britt              Son       10       1870       SC       Oconee       Whitewater
Chasteen       Monroe              Son       5       1875       SC       Oconee       Whitewater
Chasteen       Mary A.              Daug       1       1879       SC       Oconee       Whitewater

I don't have record of the family in 1900 in South Carolina and maybe they
had relocated back to one of the counties in North Georgia by this year. I
have the 1900 Soundex for Georgia but it is not indexed and will take some
time to look through. Could Columbus noted in Eli's home be the same as
Lafayette, do you know of another name or initial for him? He would've been
about 20 years old when your grandfather was born in 1891. Also, don't
discount the Lafyatte in the home of Mike Chasteen, sometimes old memories
are just a little off if based on tradition.

Here's all that I have input in the database concerning Nancy's family:
1.       Nancy Ann Chasteen born 1819, South Carolina, (daughter of William
Chastain and Annie Motes) died 4 Oct 1913, Macon Co., North Carolina. Refs:
1850 Census - Rabun Co., GA. The Court of Claims records state that Nancy
married Mark Burrell. However, she is shown in the 1850 Census record as
Nancy Chastain and with several Chastain children. Mark Burrell was married
to Huldah Denton. There has been no divorce record found and Hulda out
lived Mark by several years. Copy of Fam. Bible of Nancy Chasteen furnished
by Charles Robbins, Death Cert. for Nancy
                            Children:
               2.       i       William Chasteen born 5 Feb 1838.
               3.       ii       James Osborn Chastain born 24 Dec 1839.
               4.       iii       Reuben Chastain born 1842, South Carolina.
               5.       iv       Martha Addaline Chastain born 6 Nov 1841, South Carolina.
               6.       v       Michael Chastain born 1843, South Carolina.
               7.       vi       Sara Matilda Chastain born 7 Mar 1846, South Carolina.
               8.       vii       Eli Chastain born 2 Mar 1848, South Carolina.
               9.       viii       Benjamin Chastain born 30 Jun 1850, South Carolina.
               10.       ix       Nancy Chastain born ABT 1850, South Carolina.
               11.       x       Drucilla Chasteen born Feb 1853.
               12.       xi       (unknown) Chasteen born 21 Sep 1855.
               13.       xii       Dicy Chasteen born 29 May 1858.
               14.       xiii       Hulda Melissa Chasteen born 25 Mar 1861.

I see that Charles Robbins is noted as a reference for the bible record, his
email is CHROBBINS@InfoAv.com and I'm sure that he would not mind if you
contacted him for further info on the family. Also, let me hear back either
way, if you think there is a connection or not, will be glad to look into
some other families but this seems to be the best fit at present. We just
need to continue adding placing and adding these descendants to the
database. Maybe one of these years when someone inquires all we will have
to do is just pull up and the name and have an instant lineage!!
