Jonathan D. Chastain was a judge of the court of ordinary in the March term of 1840 per Gilmer Co. records. I have him (first as J.D. then Jonathan D)appointed as guardian for sale of property for orphans of Syke Sanders 3 July 1838 (ck. year--my writing bad). Also, have a J.D. chastain witnessing a will of Enoch Smith 5/3/1844 in Gilmer Co. He was also an appraiser of the estate and bidder (with Benj. and J.W. Chastain). Smith apparently married into the family as there were Chastain Legatees. The Estate of Jonathan D. Chastain was appraised on 9 Aug. 1848 and included large notes on E.W. Chastain. When Aaron Pinson (also said to have been an ordinary judge in Gilmer) died, his estate debts included two notes "L.(or J.)D. Ellington vs. A. Pinson and J.D. Chastain". Prior to moving to Gilmer (by 1838)Aaron Pinson had lived in Haywood then Macon N.C. ---same as the Gilmer Chastains. His grandfather, Rev. Aaron Pinson and J.D. Chastain's G.F. (correct me if I'm wrong here) John "Ten Shilling Bell" Chastain had both been prominant So. Carolina Baptist ministers and had both moved to what is now N.E. Tennessee (then overmountain colonies under N.C. jurisdiction) and resided there during the Revolution Before returning to N.C. Aaron's sons were under command of E.W. Chastain in the 2nd Seminole Indian War and one was married in the house of Joseph Carleton Chastain in Union Co. (I have him as 1st cousin of Gilmer Chastains). In 1850 Gilmer, this son (Aristides Brown Pinson) is listed right next door (#915,916) to John and Jane Prather. Are they part of the Prather connection you mention? I believe I have a possible maternal Chastain line, but haven't pinned it down. Aaron Pinson's wife, Mary, was born September 17, 1780 per a bible page from a son's war file. They were probably married in Pendleton S.C. If anyone should find a match please contact me. G.Pinson graypinson@Earthlink.net
