Good to hear from you again. As I mentioned, I am personally convinced that James W Chastain (b. 1813, NC) is a descendant of Rev John through either Edward Brigand then John C or via Abner then Benjamin (1793). Convincing circumstantial cases can be made for either line of decent, but, as you say proof in the conventional sense is lacking.
Your comment about a Benjamin Chastain being involved in the estate sale of Enoch Smith is intriguing. I hadn’t heard this before. This might be a more meaningful clue than it seems at first glance. Would you be able to share a copy of the Enoch Smith probate docs or point me to a source for this estate sale? I’d like to get a copy of this information and add this to my file on James W Chastain.
Also, I have recently acquired some other new information on James W Chastain. Rather than clog up the List, I could send you the details off list if you like.
