My grandfather was Henry T. Shasteen Jr of Franklin Co, TN. My cousin Joy and I have recently started trying to get Shasteen males(and any and all of the name variations!) to participate in a free DNA test offered by the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation. You can find their website here:

Our intent is to gather information of the unknown branches of the Shasteen family tree, attempt to find relationships in the different variations of the name spelling and to trace our Shasteen ancestry farther back in time. My uncle has submitted a test kit. At this time he is our last blood relative in ten generations(from abt.1786) of Shasteen's that Joy has been able to document. She has done all the hard work with research and getting our Shasteen genealogy published!
Even in our own small community family members have made changes to their surname.
As with any of the DNA testing, the donor information remains anonymous. Contact with any close matches is made through SMGF so you can decide if you want contact via email, etc. One drawbacks with the SMGF free test is that you do not actually receive the test results. However, as more people are tested and close matches are found, the results of the matches can be viewed on their website and contact can be made through SMGF if desired. SMGF uses a 32 marker test whereas familytreedna starts with a 12 marker test for about $100 and charges more for each additional increased marker test. With more DNA markers in common, the closer in time you come to finding a common ancestor. You can import familytreedna DNA test results and others to SMGF. SMGF currently has some relevant results in their data base but we need more!
