The Clayton Tribune (Rabun Co. GA) Thursday, February 23, 1928, Page 1: “Lewis Martin Chastain---In the year of the beginning of the Civil War, when the first battle of Manassas was fought, at which that great Southern hero, Gen. Thomas J. Jackson was applauded with the well deserving sobriquet “Stonewall,” when the war fever was registering above 100, then this noble and heroic character, whose photo adorns this page, was born among the sunny hills and on the beautiful stream of Hightower, Towns County, Georgia. After 25 years spent within his native county, he came to Rabun County and married, was a persistent tiller of the soil; a successful teacher for 22 years; was County Superintendent of Schools for 14 years, a record unchallenged by any other county official of the county; a consistent member of the Baptist Church; a loyal Sunday School worker; owns and operates a substantial mercantile business at Lakemont, Georgia. For a quarter of a century Mr. Chastain has held the honored position of President of the Rabun County Singing Convention, a position uncompensated; deservingly popular and lived by every member of the Convention. He is persistent in enterprise, untiring in service, consistent and devoted to constituents and friends, and pleasant and admonishing in demeanor. It is the Convention’s sincere wish that we may have many more years of his service as an adept presiding officer and for the Christian attitude for which he stands.” ---Courtesy of Rabun County Singing Convention minutes.
