Hi again Patricia,
I got a reply from another researcher today and just re-read your posting which is related. The family tree I have lists Rene Marion Chastin born 24 June 1839 as the son of Elijah Chastain and Catherine Carson (his third wife). Catherine is a sister of my 3g grandfather.
The 1850 census in Gilmer GA lists "Remmy" or "Renny" as a "female" age 11 (child of Elijah and Catherine Chastain). The child (based on other sources I've seen) is actually a son (male) Rene Chastain and not a female. Many of the censuses were transribed later and some have errors.
