Dahlonega Nugget, (Lumpkin Co. GA) October 23, 1914: “Dawson County Has A Murder---Parties from Dawson County here last Monday informed us that Dave Chastain, who was found a few days ago with his head crushed, died on Sunday. At last accounts no arrests had been made. The particulars of the occurrence is clipped from the last issue of the Dawsonville Advertiser, which is as follows: “Mr. Dave Chastain of near McKee was found unconscious near his home, lying near his garden, with a deep hole in his head, last Friday morning by a passerby. Medical aid was summoned and the wounded man treated but he did not regain consciousness until Saturday night, after an operation was performed by Dr. Goss of Gilmer and Dr. West of this place, which was necessary to remove a part of his skull and the bruised blood. No one seems to know the particulars of the affair as the ones involved have failed to show up, warrants being issued for Porter Anderson and Doc Vaughters. It is said that Vaughters acknowledged to hitting him in the head but after the warrants were issued neither he or Anderson are to be found. All parties are said to have been drinking.” Dahlonega Nugget, 9Lumpkin Co. GA) March 19, 1915: “The sheriff of Dawson County has brought Arthur Vauters back from Texas, who is charged with the killing of Dave Chastain in that county some time ago. Porter Anderson, implicated in the murder, is still at large.” Notify Administrator about this message?
