Mary Jane Chastain was born 06 Jan 1848 in Henry Co, KY to parents George and Sarah Ann (Thompson) Chastain. Both George and Sarah were born around 1820. Sarah was the second wife of George Chastain and they were married 22 Oct 1846 in Oldham Co, KY. Apparently Sarah Thompson died before 1849 when George married Virginia Mann. George died in late 1859 or early 1860 as his wife is noted as head of household in the 1860 census. Mary Jane was noted in the 1850 census but not in this household in 1860. Mary Jane married William Perry Hobson in Burgetts Corner, Clinton Co, IN on 12 Aug 1862 when she was only 14 so it is thought that she may have moved from KY to IN to live with other relatives after her father died. Since her husband, William Perry Hobson, reinlisted in Co. H, 86th Reg't., Indiana Vols. and left to fight again in the Civil War just 2 days after they were married, she must have had family that she could stay with while she awaited his return.
