Re: Vinney/Venney Crowell & Eliza Chase at Yarmouth, Barnstable, Mass.

I am trying to find the parents for two persons who lived at Barnstable, Mass. (either at Barnstable, Sandwich or Yarmouth) and are connected to Venney Crowell through a marriage. I read everything I could find online about him this morning and I see he was born about April 8th, 1814 possibly at Dennis, Mass. to parents Venney Crowell senior and his wife Experience also nee Crowell. Venney senior born 1772 was the son of Solomon Crowell and Ruth Young. A question- was the name "Venney" or "Vinney" short for Silvanus? I see other Sylvanus/Silvanus Crowell's at same time in Massachusetts.

The younger Venney/Vinney Crowell born 1814 married Eliza Ann nee CHASE on January 6, 1842 at Yarmouth. Everyone has her recorded as Eliza Ann Fuller, but I am sure that she was Eliza Ann Chase.

On the 1850 census she is with Vinny and they have Eliza's daughter Emeline B. Fuller living in their home. Emeline was born August 3, 1834, and married James M. Swift on May 15, 1864 at Falmouth. Because James Swift was 20 years older than Emeline I suspect he had one or possibly two other wives before he married Emeline. James M. Swift was born Sept. 25, 1813 and was the son of Alvan Swift and Patience Coleman. Could James Swift's first wife have been Rebecca Dexter Bourne who died Sept. 5, 1842 @ Falmouth at age 23 years or does she belong to a different James Swift?

NEGHS has Emeline B. Fuller's birth listed with parents William Fuller and Eliza Ann Chase.

Other children who may be siblings to Emeline are:

Warren C. Fuller born Feb. 22, 1825 (had 3 different wives),

William Fuller born Oct. 15, 1832, and

Loring Fuller born 1831, a Master Mariner- an occupation which seemed to run in this family.

There is a brief online bio for Loring Fuller which states his parents to be William Fuller and Eliza Ann Chase and that he was the grandson of a William Fuller. This Loring Fuller married Mary C. Ryder in 1853 whom I believe might be the daughter of Joseph Ryder and Hannah Crowell, the latter two both born in 1812. Hannah Crowell was the daughter of Venny Crowell and Experience Crowell and a sister therefore to the younger Venny Crowell who married Eliza Ann Chase/the widow Fuller.

In that brief bio for Loring Fuller it is stated that he was one of NINE SONS OF William Fuller and Eliza Ann Chase.

If I am correct therefore about William and Warren being his brothers, then who were the other SIX Fuller men who belong in this family? What is REALLY puzzling is if Emeline came from a large family- had nine brothers and possibly other sisters, where the heck are they all on the 1850 census? Were they all a lot older than Emeline and already on their own as Warren and William were? Loring was born in 1831- where was he in year 1850?

There might be other sisters as well-
I do believe that this is the family of William Fuller in 1840-

1840 census @ Barnstable in Barnstable County, Mass has one William Fuller with one male age 5-10; 2 males ages 10-15; 2 males ages 15-20; 2 males ages 20-30; one male age 50-60; one female age 5-10; 1 female age 10-15; one female 20-30; one female 40-50.

I forgot to copy exact details for the 1830 census but there is one male in the house of William Fuller age 40-50 which would tell me he was older than I thought he was, placing him as being born about 1780-1790....one female under 5, one female 15-20, one female 30-40, and SEVEN young males.

Census info for Eliza Ann Chase Fuller is consistent in her being born about 1814 but that would make her too young to have had Warren Fuller who was born in 1825. So either she was older than what was reported on the census's she appears in...say born 1810, and having Warren when she was only 15 years old....(quite possible), or she was a second younger wife to the William Fuller born 1780-1790. (With William's first wife also being an Eliza Chase which seems unlikely).

Regardless this William Fuller must have died prior to December 1841 when intentions were posted for Vinny Crowell and Eliza to marry.

Vinny and Eliza had at least one child of their own, a daughter Ellen A. Crowell born Sept. 18, 1852 at Yarmouth. She married Henry W. Taylor.

Warren C. Fuller's three wives were:

Irene D. Atkins born 1830 in Maine

Adeline P. Covil born 1826 in Dennis, Mass., and

Almeda B. Harris born 1838 in New Hampshire

There is a ref. to Adeline and Warren having a son named Ensign G. Fuller born 1849. I have not yet looked for possible other children for Warren.

I do not know the maiden name of the wife of the younger (sibling) William Fuller- he was born 1832 and his wife appears on census's as Mercy W. born about 1839 in Mass. So far I have found only one son for them- Wilfred Fuller born about 1866.

Here is that excerpt for Loring Fuller born 1831 (had 3 children):

This excerpt taken from "History of Barnstable County, Massachusetts.: 1620-1637-1686-1890": page 494

Loring Fuller born in 1831 is one of nine sons of William and Eliza (Chase) Fuller, and a grandson of William Fuller. He has been a seafaring man since he was ten years old. Since 1866 he has run a packet from South Yarmouth in connection with the grain and coal store of Loring Fuller & Co. He was married in 1853 to Mary C. Ryder. They have three children: Joseph W. who married Clara E. Hurst in 1876; Lizzie B., Mrs. C. F. Purrington, and Mernie L. (Mercy?)

Note from Nora- on 1880 census his daughters were Lizzie and Mercy, not "Mernie" as is written above. Lizzie B. is also seen as Eliza B. Fuller and she married Charles Purrington.

I know this is a lot of info to post but I am hoping someone will recognize these names and can help me make some connections. What I want to find more than anything then...are the parents and family of origin for the Eliza Ann Chase who was married to William Fuller and was the mother of Emeline B. Fuller, and the parents and family of origin of her first husband William Fuller.

Thanks from Nora
