Read Nathaniel Philbrick's "In the Heart of the Sea -- The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex", Viking, 2000. It is a fascinating read, a tale of how the Essex was wrecked by a sperm whale in the Pacific, and the crew's attempts to stay alive while sailing in the whaling boats over 93 days, resorting to cannibalism.
