I found the following information that may provide you some leads:

1.) William T. Charles, Ed. 1, Census Index: U.S. Selected States/Counties, 1870

Individual: Charles, William T.
County/State: Denton Co., TX
Location: 1st Precinct Denton
Page #: 131
Year: 1870

2.) The 1850 US Census identified William as living in the Burleson & Brazos District in Burleson County, Texas. It identified him as a farmer and his property was worth $400. The 1850 Census was difficult to read. His middle initial may have been "T" in place of "J".
