Jacob Charles' wife NOT Mary Sparks

I have since found the original records which led people to believe Jacob Charles' wife was Mary Sparks. There is a deed (Dor. Co. DBk 8, p. 248)--Henry Sparks of Dorchester Co. to his daughter in law Mary Charles of same county one bay horse (23 Dec 1728). w/ George Smart, John Rider, Jr.

You will notice that Henry Sparks (aka Parks), a tailor, who died about 1734, leaving a will identifying Jacob Charles as his son and residuary legatee, calls Mary Charles his daughter in law, not his daughter. This either means that Mary was the wife of his son (actually stepson) Jacob Charles or that she was the daughter of his wife at the time, but not his own daughter. In no case does "daughter in law" ever indicate that a person was a biological daughter. So I think this Mary Charles was either Jacob Charles' wife or his sister, also named Mary. More likely the former than the latter. MARY CHARLES, WIFE OF JACOB, THEN, WAS ALMOST CERTAINLY MARY DAVIS, WIFE OF SOLOMON DAVIS AND ELEANOR WRIGHT not a fictional Mary Sparks.

Henry Sparks probably married a widow Charles and, having no children of his own, considered his wife's son Jacob as his own. Perhaps they are to be identified with the Charles family of nearby Accomack Co., VA. A John Charles with wife Ann died between 1 Jul 1707 and 1 Jun 1708. He made her his residuary legatee and executor leaving her a tract of land of 120 acres purchased from Edmund Scarborough. Witnesses were all members of the Hutchinson family: Robert, Margaret and John.

By the way, if HEnry Sparks refers to Jacob Charles as his son in his will of 1734 (Maryland Calendar of Wills, Bk 21, p. 120), then that means the Isaac Charles who married Sarah Stevens and died in Dorchester County, ca. 1749, cannot possibly be this Jacob's father. Jacob's real father had to have been dead by 1734. So Isaac, at best, could only be a brother of Jacob.
