My wife's great grandfather was Joel David Charles, whose father was Issac Charles. Joel was a cadet at The Citadel when the Civil War began. He was captured and sent to a POW camp on Johnson Island in Lake Erie, not far from Toledo. We have a photo, his revolver (he carved his initials in the grip), and a couple of letters from Johnson Island. A few years ago we happened to meet, by just plain dumb luck, some people whose ancestor had also been held on that island and who had sent home a hand-drawn map of the island. We have a copy. Joel was born near Greenville SC and is buried there, in a Charles Family Cemetery which my wife and I visited just last week. Issac is buried there, too. He was one of twelve brothers and sisters. You should call or write Jane Charles Hansley (Mrs. Frank), 1010 Golf Course Road, Piedmont, SC 29673 as she has compiled a rather extensive Charles family history. Unfortunately, she's not on the internet.
