Smith Charles' father, Elizabeth's husband, was Elisha Charles of Guilford Co., NC. He died about 1825 and his estate mentions a settlement with certain heirs in 1828. Rebecca Charles and Benjamin Jones (husband of Mary Charles) each made a settlement bond in that year.
Elisha, in turn, was a younger son of Jacob Charles of Dorchester Co., MD, whose will was recorded there in 1776 on the affirmation of his son, Isaac. This family was Nicholite Quaker in North Carolina. Jacob Charles' wife appears to have been Mary Davis, daughter of Solomon Davis, Sr. of Dorchester County by his first wife (d. 1774). Solomon had seventeen children listed in his will.
My ancestor was Mary Charles Marine (b. 1746), an elder sister of Elisha, who married Jonathan Marine and moved from Dorchester to Marlboro County, SC. They were affiliated with Piney Woods Monthly Meeting there as regular Quakers.
