I am just starting research on my husband's Charles family, though I've done a great deal on my own family. I can trace the family to Isaac Charles, born about 1804, father of John Smith Charles, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pa. Limited information indicates that John Smith Charles was an only child. Going back further in the censuses, there are Isaac, Elijah and Elisha Charles in Moon Township, near Pittsburgh, and still earlier, Lemon, Isaac, Elisha and Elijah Charles are found in Guilford, North Carolina. There is also an Isaac Charles in Maryland, who could be the ancestor of my Isaac. However, I see that there was a Smith Charles from Guilford, N.C., and am wondering if he could be a brother of Isaac? Does anyone have more information which might help me trace this family?
