Carboneau, Walter James, Quebec? 1890's

I am trying to search my father's family. All I know is that around the late 1800's they came to Manistee Michigan to work for the Morton Salt Company. They were french canadians, from Montreal vicinity. By the time I got the name, it was spelled Carboneau. But I suspect that it was Charbonneau or ended in "x" or something more French than the above. I am also new at genealogy, and know very little. Thanks for any help available!
