I'm a caucasian Chapel, descended from the caucasian CHAPPELL line. But I met a black gentleman in Baltimore back around the mid 1970's and his last name was CHAPPELL. I struck up a conversation with him as he was the first black man I'd met with the name. I have yet to find any member of my lineage who owned slaves (they were all too poor), and that's where most blacks in the 1800's obtained their last names. You may call information and contact a few people in the Baltimore area with that name. Good luck in your search.
