My mother had written information on the Chappell family for my daughters family history assignment many years ago. There had been several cousins who had worked on this information over several years, but I have
not been able to verify that it was published. Perhaps this information will
solve the question about the duplicate Roberts.

Captain John Chappell was a descendant of Sir Robert Chappell of Nottinghamshire, England
and was prominent there during the 16th century. Captain John sailed the Speedwell
from Southampton, England in 1635. There are two versions of his story. One: that he stayed and settled in VA; the other that he went back with his ship and his son, Robert, came the next year and stayed. At any rate his sons Robert, Samuel and Zachariah, all seem to have patented land on the James River. When my grandmother was in Washington, D.C. one time, she went to the southern point of Maryland and visited the replica of the original State House. A large map of the original Maryland grant was about half marked "Chappell's Land". The two grants of Maryland and Virginia were apparently not well defined.
Zachariah had a son, Robert, born December 5, 1671 in Virginia. He married a woman by the name of Hannah and had a son named Richard, born June 18, 1693. This Richard went to North Carolina between 1720 and 1727 and settled either in Schoan or Perquinnan County. His son, Robert, was born there in 1729. This last Robert's son, Job, is our ancestor. He had children named William, Jacob and Joab by his wife, Leah Bond.
Joab was born July 3, 1781 in Perquinnan County, NC. He married Elizabeth Elliott who was the daughter of William Elliott, a Revolutionary soldier, and Peninah Elliott. Elizabeth and Joab were married in NC, April 8, 1802 and their first child, Peninah, was born there October 8, 1809. In 1810 Joab and Eliz. left for the Northwest Territories and
settled near White Oak Springs where Petersburg, Indiana is now. In 1811 Joab enlisted under Gen. Wm Henry Harrison and fought in the Battle of Tippicanoe on Nov. 7. Joab died of yellow fever April 11, 1833.

Line continues with Joabs son Stephen Chappell, born Sept 15, 1811 in White Oak Spring, IN. Married Hannah Miller December 19, 1832. Died April 22, 1873 in Algiers,IN, Hannah died February 8, 1887.
Their children were William E, born September 22, 1834; Sarah E b. March 30, 1836; d. Sept 14, 1882; Alexander L b Dec 27 1837; d. Sept 4, 1883; Fielding A b July 23, 1840, d Feb. 1875; Perry W. b June 24, 1842; died 1905; Stephen White b Mar 30, 1845, d May 6, 1928; Mary Frances b Oct 8, 1946; died 1927.

If anyone has other information to fill in on
the brothers and sisters of any of the above
before Stephen; or Stephens grandchildren, please let me know. All of Stephens family were born in Pike County, Indiana. Many of
the family still live there.
