Hi! I have a 3rd gr grandmother by the name of Mary Elizabeth Chappell. Here is what I have, but I'm not certain about the accuracy of some of it. I have found other researchers reporting a birth year of 1839. However, she is listed in the Allen Springs, Pope County, IL census as being 27 years of age. So a birth year of 1833. If she was actually born in 1839, then I suspect I found her and the family in Macon County, AL in 1850. If she was born in 1833, then possibly I found her in Pope County in 1850 living in the Thomas Chapell household. However, the state of birth in that census is listed as TN. The Illinois database of marriages shows a marriage to James Hazel December 5, 1853. This marriage produced a son by the name of King T. Hazel. On December 4, 1856, she married John E. Speck. In 1860, she is listed in the Pope County census married to John Speck, showing state of birth as Alabama, and having an age of 27. After 1860, I can't find her. John Speck died in 1868. Some other researchers report that she died in Carmi, White County, IL in 1894. I can't confirm this. What has always bothered me about this story is that if the 1839 birth year is correct then she was married at 14, and married again at 17. This has just been hard for me to swallow. Is anyone out there familiar with Mary Elizabeth Chappel? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Robert Schneider Berkeley Missouri Notify Administrator about this message?
